The Ruth Lilly Medical Library is pleased to announce a new addition to the History of Medicine Collection that is now open for research. The Hubert E. Judy Papers document the tragically short life and career of Hoosier, IU School of Medicine graduate, and physician/surgeon, Hubert Eugene Judy (1926-1957). This small collection consists of records relating to Hubert E. Judy's attendance at and graduation from the Indiana University School of Medicine between 1948 and 1952, his completion of a general surgery residency and six-month research fellowship at Indianapolis General Hospital between 1953 and 1957, and his subsequent death later that same year. Materials include correspondence, commencement announcement and program, diploma, certificates, physician license, newspaper clippings, photographs, and an obituary.
Hubert Eugene Judy, the third son of Arthur Miller and Hannah Susan (Sites) Judy, was born on August 22, 1926, in North Manchester, Indiana. After graduating from Chester Township High School in 1944, he attended Manchester College and graduated with an A.B. degree in 1949. During college, he married Muriel Mardelle Brill in Noble Indiana on June 3, 1948. By many accounts, Muriel devoted much of her time and effort toward her husband's goal of becoming a physician and surgeon.

Judy entered Indiana University School of Medicine in September 1948 and graduated in June 1952. The following year, Judy moved to Long Beach, California, where he spent a year on a rotating internship at Seaside Memorial Hospital. Initially, he was interested in obstetrics and gynecology but ultimately decided to train in general surgery. In 1953, Judy began a four-year residency in general surgery at Indianapolis General Hospital (now Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital). During that time, he also completed a research fellowship with the Charles J. Wolf Foundation for Medical Research which led to the creation of a blood vessel bank at the hospital. Judy completed his residency training in general surgery in June 1957 and entered general surgery private practice the following month. He was a member of the Indianapolis Medical Society, Indiana State Medical Association, and the American Medical Association, and was also an active member of the Surgical Staff at Community Hospital, and courtesy member of the surgical sections at Methodist and St. Vincent's Hospitals. Hubert E. Judy died on December 4, 1957, from (according to the death certificate) carbon monoxide poisoning due to inhalation of exhaust fumes while working on a car in his home garage. He is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in North Manchester, Indiana.
