The John Shaw Billings History of Medicine Society is named in honor of Hoosier John Shaw Billings. On November 14, 2024, Dr. Richard Gunderman presented a John Shaw Billings History of Medicince Society Talk honoring the society's namesake and highlighting Billings' various contributions to medical education, public health, philanthropy, and librarianship.

Richard B. Gunderman, MD, PhD is Chancellor's Professor of Radiology, Pediatrics, Medical Education, Philosophy, LiberalArts, Philanthropy, and Medical Humanities and HealthStudies at Indiana University. He is also John A Campbell Professor of Radiology and in 2019-2021 served asBicentennial Professor. He received his AB from WabashCollege; MD and PhD from the University of Chicago; and MPHfrom Indiana University. He is the current president of the John Shaw Billings History of Medicine Society.
